City Guide
Baltimore is a magical mystical place where MEGAPOLIS partyfunz happen on occasion (May 14-16 2010). Some people crap their pants when they see Baltimore on the TV Wire show because someone dies after selling drugs to someone who gets shot while doing drugs. That is why TV is the TV. Surprisingly enough there are large pockets of city where real people actually live normal lives and make art and do other amazing things, and these are the places we will take you to. In fact there are probably more artists per capita here than most places in the known world. And that’s why we’s here.

Places to Stay
Hostel
MEGAPOLIS REcOMmEnDS THiS! Baltimore has a great hostel in the very nice Mt. Vernon neighborhood straight south of our venues. (See the easy trip from the hostel to the Hexagon, our HQ.) The people who run it are supercool and nice and will help you figure out directions and transports. It’s about a 20-minute walk (Google says 25 but fasties can do it in 15) through a safe neighborhood or a 7-minute bus ride (3 or 11 buses) almost straight north to festival venues. As of April 26th there are 33 beds available, all at the bargain basement price of $31.38/night or 3 bucks less if you’re a Hosteling International member. There are two 12-bed dorms, one for guys (9 beds free as of 4/26) and one for gals (8 beds free), and two 8-bed co-ed dorms (both completely empty as of now). THESE ROOMS WILL GO FAST, so book them now by emailing info AT baltimorehostel.org or calling 410-576-8880 between the hours of 8am and 11pm EST seven days a week. Book for May 14 (Fri) and 15 (Sat) to catch most of the festival and the 16th if you want to stick around for a great co-sponsored Sunday night event. You only need a credit card (NO deposit) and you can cancel the room up to 24-hours in advance. LOVELY!!!
Couch-swiping
If yer solo and don’t know a soul OR want to spend a penny on lodging in Bmore, Megapolis Festival thinks you should be finding some couch using the highly free CouchSurfing.com. Make a profile, post your sexy poses, lie about your age, make yourself sound cooler than the lovechild of Gary Busey and Judy Dench, and stay with some awesome people who may even like audio art as much as your twisted self.
Hotelling
If you have money to burn, go to richy rich hotels and get that private spa and minibar and valet service for your Maserati. Then invite us over to spray champagne on the walls because you have to. You’ve got a couple reasonable options: stay in the neighborhood around Johns Hopkins (~25 minute walk north from festival venues; short bus ride) or stay on the eastern part of the Inner Harbor (long walk; ~15 minute bus ride). Magically the same bus, the 11 (schedule / route map), connects JHU and the Inner Harbor while running straight through venue central.
What To Bring
Yourself. Other people. Your wallet. Some snacks. Stickers. Fishing wire. Various pinwheels.
SRSLY tho, you should bring all of the above plus:
- some moneys. No meals are included in the ticket price. We’d love to provide you with that if our wallets were deep, but alas. We’ll also have merch for you soze you can relieve yourself of those unwanted coins.
- your ‘gear’. Some workshops actually require you to be prepared with recording gear, laptops, instruments, etc. Read the workshop descriptions with a keen eye to determine what you need. If you’re not sure, ask us.
- audio/vidio/photo recorderz, even if you aren’t attending one of the above workshops, if you want to help us document all the crazee things going on. We’ll happily link to your efforts from our website after the fest.
- appropriate clothings. Some events are outside in rain/sun. Update 5/11: looks like a storm is rolling through on Friday day and leaving mostly sunny skies and mid-70s temps for the weekend. HOT ZANG. However we can’t predict how cold or warm it will be inside festival venues. PLANIT.
Getting Around BMOR
Caveman-style (Walking)
Yes, with real-life legs and feets and luxury shoes. Everything is walkable if you put your mind to it. Grab a map from the festival HQ. Follow signs. Walk in groups. Ask a helpful Megafest volunteer or organizer if you think you be getting lost.
Public transit
- Buses run fairly regularly and are reasonably reliable. You can see a schedule here.
- Subway (NOT RECOMMENDED): Baltimore has a subway system. It is not close enough to anything to be helpful. DO NOT BOTHER. If you defy us at that subway platform and end up with one more brick to the face and one less lunch pail, don’t say we didn’t warn you.
Bikes
You can rent a bike if you’re the two-wheel-motion type. Light Street Cycles does some of that: (410) 685-2234
Taxis
Ride in style. Hail it up with a arm-out waving hand motion. Pay in dollars, tip in kindness.
Getting To BeeMore
Bus
- From NYC: Bolt Bus and MVP Bus (both drop you off a couple blocks from festival venues, have WiFI and are about $20)
- From DC: Marc Train (~$7)
- From somewhere else: Greyhound or Peter Pan
Train
Amtrak has trains. This ain’t no Buffalo Bill-era stuff either. We’re talking Internet, contour cushions and soy crisps. Most normal people take the bus tho. Just sayin’.
Plane
BWI airport city isn’t that far away. You can then take the Marc Train or the Light Rail to downtown Baltimore, not far from festival venues. If you are a glutton for punishment you could fly to D.C. and take the Marc.
Automobile
Let John Candy and Steve Martin drive you all the way to Megapolis heaven. Or drive yourself, FINE. Plenty of parking around festival venues.
