Updates: Third Coast Festival & free103point9

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

Two of our favorite audio organizations-The Third Coast International Audio Festival and free103point9-are teaming up with us to bring you two head-explodingly awesome events the weekend of Megapolis:

THE THIRD COAST FESTIVAL LISTENING ROOM embraces the curious art of group listening, by presenting unforgettable audio work and giving radio fans the chance to listen together and reflect on what they hear. For Megapolis, TCF Artistic Director Julie Shapiro and special guest / Boston-based radio producer Sean Cole will share a selection of stories specially chosen to explore the sounds and stories of cities, real and imagined. TCF comes to Megapolis thanks to generous support from The Public Radio Exchange.

RADIO 4×4: MEGAPOLIS is a presentation by free103point9 featuring a series of performances by artists independently presenting/performing in Megapolis. Celebrating the spirit of the festival’s mission, this series will provide an opportunity for unique collaborations and content creation specific to the community of artists brought together for the weekend. Radio 4×4 is a collaborative radio transmission performance. Four simultaneous audio performances are separately sent through FM transmitters tuned to different frequencies and are picked up by radios positioned throughout a performance space and tuned to those four frequencies. The audience becomes an active collaborator in the performance, “mixing” the audio feeds by moving about the space among the four signals.

Happy New Year audioheads,

Here are the latest updates from Megapolis HQ:

GREGORY WHITEHEAD is Saturday’s first featured presenter. Hurray! Whitehead is a veteran audio producer and radio playwright, the winner of numerous Very Important Awards (such as the BBC Award, Prix Futura and the Prix Italia), and makes his appearance at Megapolis thanks to generous support from Transom.org .

We’re also pleased to announce NYC-based radio bricoleur Joshua Fried’s RADIO WONDERLAND and local electro-theremin rock stars THE LOTHARS will be performing for opening night on Friday. Yah!

Submission deadline approaches. Wednesday, Feb 11th. There are less than 5 weeks left to submit a workshop, presentation, or performance proposal. Get to it, people.

Our list of partners and supporters is growing. WZBC, the Public Radio Exchange, Transom.org, the Pierre Menard Gallery, and the Boston Cyberarts Festival are all helping to bring Megapolis to you. Does your organization want to be a part? We’re looking for help to pay for travel expenses of presenters, venues, and more. Send an email to contact [at] megapolisfestival [dot] org.
