Mia Zabelka is a classically trained experimental violinist and vocalist from Vienna who de- and re-constructs the violin’s sonic possibilities the process she calls AUTOMATIC PLAYING, continuously exploring sound as physical phenomena by pairing violin with live electronic devices, inserting alien objects between the strings, and using innovative performance techniques. Her instrument, voice, and body transform into sonic bodies that are simultaneously organic and primal, screaming, lyrical, composed, and explosive. She has collaborated with renowned artists such as Lydia Lunch,Phill Niblock, John Zorn, Robin Rimbaud, Pauline Oliveros, Electric Indigo, Dälek, Saffronkeira, John Russell, Maggie Nicols, and Audrey Chen in concerts and festivals throughout Europe, America, and Asia. She is a 3-time winner of the Prix Ars Electronica and was has been a guest of the German Academic Exchange Service’s international artists’ programme in Berlin and the Fulbright Commission in New York.
